Spiritual Significance of Sri Pada

Buddhists believe the footprint at the summit is believed to be the sacred imprint of Lord Buddha himself, left during his third visit to the island. Hindus believe the footprint to Lord Shiva, while Christians and Muslims revere it as the mark of Adam's first step after being exiled from the Garden of Eden. This belief has transformed Sri Pada into a symbol of unity and harmony among different faiths, drawing pilgrims seeking blessings and enlightenment.

Adam's Peak Pilgrimage Experience

Embarking on the pilgrimage to Sri Pada is not merely a physical journey but also a spiritual journey. There are many ways to climb Sri Pada, Hatton-Nallathanniya, Ratnapura-Palabaddala and Kuruwita - Erathna. The traditional route, starting from the town of Nallathanniya, makes its way through lush forests and quaint villages, offering pilgrims glimpses of rural life and serene natural beauty. As they ascend, the air becomes thick with anticipation and devotion, mingling with the scent of incense wafting from temples along the path. There are 5,500 stairs to the summit of Sri Pada, or “Adam's Peak”. Pilgrims, young and old, embark on this challenging climb, spurred on by the rhythmic chanting of religious hymns and the camaraderie of fellow travelers. The total distance for the summit of Adam’s Peak is about 7 km, but it will take 5 - 6 hours to climb. Best time to climb Adam’s Peak is December to April. But most of the tourists like to climb Sri Pada or Adam’s Peak during the Off season.
