Best Time to Visit Horton Plains National Park
The best season to visit Minneriya National Park is between January to March. During the dry season, the skies are typically clear, offering unobstructed views at World’s End and pleasant conditions for trekking. This period also has minimal rainfall.
Off-Season: April to December While this is the wet season, the park’s lush greenery and mist-covered landscapes are especially enchanting. Wildlife activity remains consistent, although trails may be muddy.
Challenges: Heavy rains can make some trails slippery.
How to reach Horton Plains from Colombo
Car
The full journey takes only approximately 5 hr 50 min (176 km)via Avissawella - Hatton - Nuwara Eliya road, but it depends on road traffic conditions.
Bus
You can take a bus from the Colombo central bus stand, to Nuwara Eliya.
Colombo - Nuwara Eliya (Bus No 79) Get off at Nuwara Eliya. From there you have to take the Ohiya bus, From Ohiya take a taxi or tuk-tuk to Horton plains entrance. Journey may take around 6 to 8 hours.
Train
Take a train from Colombo Fort to Nanu Oya, from Nanu Oya station take a taxi or tuk-tuk to Horton plains entrance. Journey may take around 6 to 7 hours. It's recommended to check the train schedule and book tickets, especially during peak times.
