About Embekka Devalaya

The Ambakka temple is located in the village of Davulugala junction, not far from Pilimathala. This Ambakka temple is special because of the carvings here. The woodwork at the temple has been recognized by UNESCO, as a World Heritage Site. This temple can be called one of the signs that reflects the carving art of Sri Lanka in the past. It is said in history that “Pihimbiya”, “Na”, “Halmilla” and “Gammalu” woods have been used for the carvings here. It is said that this Ambakka temple was built during the reign of King Vikramabahu 3rd. There are many legends related to this temple. .

“In the past, a drummer who was suffering from leprosy in a village not far from the Ambakka temple went to Kataragama and prayed to God, and his leprosy was cured. After that, he performed drumming puja every year. Of late he has found it difficult to get there. One day, he was shown in a dream a place where he could perform Pudapooja, and legend has it that the place shown is where the Ambakka Temple is today”. Several carvings are found in the Ambakka temple, among which are the dragon, Nalagana, Mallava Pora, and Hansaputtu.

How to reach Embekka from Colombo

The full journey takes approximately 3-4 hours via Colombo - Kandy - Pilimathalawa, The distance between Colombo to Kandy is about 118km but it depends on road traffic conditions.

Bus

There are direct buses from Colombo to Kandy Good Shed Bus Station station, You can take a bus from the Colombo central bus stand, and the journey may take around 3 to 4 hours. From there you have to take a taxi or tuk-tuk to Embekka.

You can take a train from the Colombo Fort railway station, and the journey may take around 3 - 4 hours. The distance between Colombo to Kandy is about 118km.
