Dalada maligawa (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic)
Sri Dalada Maligawa or Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is another important place among the sacred places in Sri Lanka. The temple of the tooth is located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of beautiful Kandy.
which houses the left Canine tooth of Gautama Buddha. Sri Dalada Maligawa is venerated by thousands of local and foreign devotees and tourists.
The temple of the tooth was named as a world heritage by UNESCO in 1988. It is built by using a unique Kandyan architectural style and using gold, silver, bronze and ivory. The first temple of the tooth was built by King Wimaladharmasuriya the first during his reign from the year (1592 to 1604). Somehow this was destroyed by the Portuguese during their invasions, the second temple was built in the same location by King Rajasinghe. (1635 – 1687). Again it was destroyed by the Dutch. King Sri Veera Parakrama Narendrasinghe (1707 – 1739) built the 2 storeyed Dalada Madura which one can see today
How to reach Kandy from Colombo
Car
The full journey takes approximately 2-3 hours, but it depends on road traffic conditions.
Can use the Colombo to Kandy highway for a faster journey.
Bus
You can take a bus from the Colombo central bus stand, and the journey may take around 3 to 5 hours. Also, you can take a bus from the Makumbura multimodal center.
Train
You can take a train from the Colombo Fort railway station, and the journey may take around 2.5 - 3 hours. It's recommended to check the train schedule and book tickets, especially during peak times.
